St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger History
The 2019 St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger is the premiere professional tennis event in south Georgia attracting some of the top names on the ATP Tour. 2019 is the 11th year of the St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger hosted at Savannah’s beautiful island community The Landings Club. Our event continues to grow in popularity as our night matches are a big hit and Lovin’ Spoons/Zaxby’s/SATA Kid’s Day and SATA Ladies Day are always extremely well attended. We have continued to upgrade our VIP section and last year’s feedback was very positive. The atmosphere for the 2019 will again be electric with lights, music, live streaming and much much more. The 2019 event will again be held in late April and is a must to attend if you are within a few hours of The Landings Club.
Over the years the St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger has had some thrilling events with players such as Mardy Fish, Ryan Harrison (2013 Champion), Michael Russell, Jack Sock, Ivo Karlovic, Nicolas Massu (2 time Gold Medalist), Donald Young, John Isner, James Blake, Kei Nishikori, Robbie Ginepri and many more. The St. Joseph’s/ Candler Savannah Challenger is always a players favorite as many have been amazed at the facilities and the southern hospitality.
The St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger and the USTA pro circuit are designed to bring some of the world’s finest tennis players to our city. Challenger tournaments are usually held for ATP players with a world ranking between 40-200 but in the case with the St. Joseph’s/ Candler Savannah Challenger our tournament can bring in players ranked in the top 20 in the world.
The USTA Challenger series allows more American players to stay here at home and improve their rankings on the ATP tour. If they are successful in building their rankings they have the opportunity to get directly into the main draw to the higher level tournaments including the Grand Slams. Points earned during the St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger count towards the USTA Wildcard entry into the French Open held in Paris, France in May.

French Open Wild Card Challenge: The St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger is part of a six-tournament series (three men’s, three women’s), wherein the American who wins the highest number of ATP/WTA points will earn a Main Draw Wild Card into the French Open.
